Watercolor Gerber Daisy
on Canson Limited Edition Paper
Pineapple Sketchbook

More practice of painting loose with no pencil.

I purchased some leftover Valentine's Day flowers after the big love fest was over. Since I love Gerber daisies and I hated seeming them go to waste, I thought they would make good practice.

They've done well, but they're just about on their last legs. I decided it was time to get busy with the paint!

Everything was going along fairly well this morning until I managed to smear the lower right corner of the daisy.

Since I was working with both Perylene Red and Anthraquinoid Red, I knew there would be no lifting the color—both pigments stain. Not to mention that this paper doesn't allow for corrections very well anyway.

So, if you can't fix it, feature it!

I threw some paint at it and called it done. I may or may not go back and add some journaling.

What have you been "featuring" on your sketchbook pages lately?

  1. What fun! Your flower looks very festive. I usually prefer to paint without drawing first and need practice drawing with line. I think it has to do with how you see - whether you see things as lines or shapes. I have to struggle more to find the lines. So it is good to practice seeing in another way!

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Ann, I don't think I've ever thought about it in those terms. I do find that certain subjects trip me up more than others. I'll have to pay more attention to whether it's lines or shapes that are plaguing me.

  3. I love "I threw some paint at it and called it done"--what a great attitude. I love the brilliant red of the flower, too.

    1. Yes, I threw a little paint as I was in a snit for messing up the page....oh well, it ended well anyway.

  4. I think your daisy came out great. I love the springtime "pollen" blowing around it too.

I just did a journal page with daisies but I took the easy way out and cut them out from a magazine's page and glued them into my journal. It worked with the page I made while yours works with the white paper you used. Just remember, some pollen is so fine it would look like a smear!

  6. I think this is a magical piece or 'happy accident'. I knew what it was before reading a word! My grandmother used to grow them in her garden and they are favorites ever since for my mom and I. I'm amazed that this was paint only - no pencil/pen help (anchor).

As for my pages... I've been sidelined with some recent classes and then 'catch-up with life'. Think I might get to work on another NOLA page tonight if I'm lucky - its already 8:46!!

  7. What a happy red flower! The splatters give it energy and lightness. I could see myself buying a coffee mug for spring with this flower on it!

What's in my journal right now...birds! (Bet that was hard to figure out! :-)

  8. This is cute. I find it more difficult to paint without sketching something first. The sketch sort of gives me some structure, a map, so to speak. I like the looseness of this painting, and a great recover with the spatters!

  9. Love your philosophy - if you can't fix it, feature it!! you made it look so purposeful, who would guess that there was a smear! I agree with Kelly, this would make a great cheerful mug design!

  10. Love the way you saved the smear - if you hadn't 'fessed up, no one would have known it was an accident. Unfortunately, I haven't done ANY sketching lately - but at least I've been quilting instead. I hope to start sketching again SOON!
