Multi-tasking Lunch—Yum!

My parents have an avocado tree in their yard and the avocados are coming in fast and furious—my mom had 50(!!) avocados on the counter the evening we went over to have dinner with them!

The cool thing about them is they're small—very small.

Mom made sure I had at least a half dozen when I came home and the largest one is not much over 3 inches long. She also sent home some guacamole so I've just now needed to make some.

However, my intention was not to make the guacamole until after lunch. Instead, I was just going to slice one for my salad at lunch time. I sliced it open and set one of the halves down by the tomato. That's when Sam (my muse) sprang up in my mind and said, "Ummm, you're not eating that are you? Sketch it!"

Taking a second look to see what had gotten her so excited, I realized she was right. Again.

You see I sometimes forget I don't have to go to Paris or San Francisco to find something worthwhile to sketch.

I just have to open my eyes to what is around me....in my own kitchen!

Sure, it's much more alluring to go to Paris or San Francisco but without the necessary monetary means to go when I want, it becomes necessary to find inspiration close to hand (and it a lot less expensive!).

If you have any experience with avocados then you know they'll turn a sickly brown shortly after being cut open. You can put lemon on them to slow down the browning or you can sit down and sketch while you're eating lunch!

I'm not sure if it was a really good salad or the sketching, but lunch was very satisfying today!

What have you done to feed your artistic self lately?

  1. I like your sketch. To have an avacado tree would be great. I love guacamole and fresh avacadoes on a sandwich or salad is yummy.

This has been a horridly dry summer here. I saw the first bug that captured my eye this summer the other day and sketched it. The first bug of the season and I don't know what it is. I left room on the page to write its name. Yep, you don't have to leave home to find something interesting to sketch.

    1. A fellow bug lover! YAY!! I had one I found the other day that was kind of a pastel green, very light mint. Unfortunately, he got dropped and fell apart. :(

Hope you find out what it is!

  2. I keep waiting for baby avocados to hit the regular market here. They are at the Farmers market. We have baby carrots and now baby cucumbers (which I love). Lovely sketch.

  3. Lucky you to have access to fresh avocado! I LOVE avocado!! And I love your sketch too - very graphic looking (especially the tomato).

We leave for cool Colorado in the morning and I'm taking my sketching stuff. Just not too sure how much I'll be able to do - I found out tonight that I have a tear in my wrist. I have to see a hand specialist when we get back - and maybe have surgery on it. I don't even know how I did it.

  8. Sam is one smart cookie. :) Very nicely done too. I find so much inspiration outside my window. Just when I think I cant find another thing to put in my journal there it is in my yard or around it anyway. I don't travel so good thing I can find things around me.

  10. My artistic muse has temporarily been taken in a very different direction. My daughter, lita Judge, needs hat for pets for the launch of an upcoming book. I have no patterns. I just add stitches, reduce stitches, rip out and start over ... sort of sculpting in yarn. So far I've knitted a hat for a parrot, a cat, and a dog!... Each hat very different from the other.

I have to admit my paints are feeling a little neglected.

    1. So please to hear Lita is painting again and I can't wait to see those hats!! What fun!

I'm sure your paints will be happy for your return but understand that hats have to come first—for now!
