Waterbrushes! A Favorite Tool!!
Waterbrushes are one of my very favorite tools! A waterbrush is simply a brush tip attached to a hollow tube that you place water in. Making a mark with a waterbrush is every bit as spontaneous as making a mark with a pencil or pen. You no longer have to tote water with you everywhere you go because it's right there in the brush handle! You'll also find that it allows for greater creativity because there's no set up or clean up.
Waterbrushes do take some getting used to and they present their own unique challenges. Pull out an old failed painting or a scrap of watercolor paper and PLAY with your waterbrush before attempting to create a piece of work with one. Once you learn their personalities and how to make that work to your advantage, I think you'll find them to be wonderful inventions!
The i•Trav•e•logue newsletter from Imaginary Trips is now posted announcing new classes dates for the Artful Journaling classes as well as a possible "mini-class!" Check it out!
This was really interesting. I am going to have to get me one of those to play around with in my sketching.
ReplyDeleteHey, Cris, they're wonderful especially for on location and quick journaling!
ReplyDeleteWhich one would you get if you could only get one? small pointed or square one?
ReplyDeleteI love rounds regardless of the "type" of brush I'm using, but he flat comes in handy for lettering and whatnot. I use the round about 96% of the time though!
ReplyDeleteIf you normally paint with a round, go with that.
I love my waterbrush too and I agree that it's worth taking the time to discover their foibles. They're great for on location washes for sketching.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I'd add is that it's not worth buying cheap ones - something about the valve mechanism. I had one that actually sucked up colour into the tube as I worked!
What interesting and fun reading! First, I checked out your posts on the "wild side" (wonderful that you have all that wildlife so easily accessible) and then read your post on the waterbrush... and had to watch the video of course! You're doing such a great job with your videos!
ReplyDeleteBravo, Laure!! You've been working really hard and it shows. Great video, love the music you chose, too.
ReplyDeleteMuch success to you!
As you know, I love the waterbrushes, too. Such a fun combination of drawing and painting.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Laure! Someone told me you'd posted on this, but I didn't realize you'd also done a video--some of those you listed I've not tried--I'll have to check out that Holbein! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've been using a waterbrush with my Pelikan fountain pen .... and love it. But, dense me, hadn't figured out how to clean it while painting. Great tip!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Necesity is the mother of invention. Just today I figured out one can let a video such as yours load fully before watching it. I just couldn't bear to watch for three seconds, wait for 5, watch for three......
Great video again Ms. Laure! You've becoming a professional at this and I'm sure it will be extremely helpful to all us creative folks! I also love the very cute little Poppy!
